Wednesday 30th January - walks ***** – Felixstowe Ferry and Fakenham
Circuit – snow – cloudy start then wall to wall sunshine:)
.
With overnight rain turning to snow I was looking forward to waking to see
Felixstowe covered in the white stuff as it doesn’t happen much on the
East Coast! On looking out of the window at 7.30 my first impression was of
disappointment as there was only a light covering but I decided to get up,
wrap up warm, clear the snow from the van leaving Mag snug in bed reading
with her coffee and our Son’s very fat cat! I headed to Felixstowe
Ferry with my camera. The scene that greeted me at The Dip was much more
impressive with only an inch of snow covering the beach and golf course. I
made my first stop by the kiosk and promptly fell flat on my back on the
ice, luckily, I didn’t hurt myself too much and more important nobody saw
it happen! Next stop the cliff top carpark for snowy beach hut roofs and
its great to see a white beach as it is a rare sight in these parts! It
would have looked better if it was not so cloudy, I continued - parking up
at the beach cottages at the end of the Golf course and set off along the
River Deben coastal path with light airs, still water and the sun just
showing now above the clouds. Past the Martello I bumped into local
photographer Alan Boyle flying his drone, he put some great videos and
stills on Facebook later:) Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Club boats were pretty
as a picture covered in snow. A quick trip around the boat yard followed by
a walk to the first stile taking some nice pics of the house boats and
wrecks:) It was then back to the van, stopping on the clifftop again to get
a few pics with the sun out. Getting home just past nine I sorted out my
pics over warming porridge, sending some to the local paper, fingers
crossed I get one in tomorrow. It was now wall to wall sunshine and as Mag
had missed out on the early morning walk, we decided to head to our
favourite Falkenham Church and walk down to the River Deben. Arriving at
11.15 the church was pretty as a picture especially with the churchyard
snowdrops covered in snow, with a blue-sky backdrop it was lovely:) Through
the graveyard down to the footpath we continued down to the river with the
fields still covered in snow but it was now melting fast! Wild life was a
little thin on the ground but then we put a Buzzard up which in turn upset
loads of pigeons. This must be a big pheasant shooting area as there are
loads of small woods and areas of maze to feed the birds, there are also
loads of big metal birdfeeders for the game birds. We crossed over the
electric cable for the offshore windfarm before making it to the Deben
spotting a few waders. Turning left we walked along the River a short
distance before heading inland again. We were then treated to a Muntjac
deer running full tilt in front of us:) Hedgerow birds were a not very
prolific apart from three Fieldfares seen earlier nothing of any note was
to be seen:( Then a dozen Long Tailed Tits whizzed past too quickly for me
to get a pic! We were saying the fields here looked ideal for hare but we
had seen none. Then Mag spotted a brown lump in a field which even with her
binoculars we were not sure what it was? By the time I had fitted my big
lens and walked closer the hare had spotted us and shot off!!! The well
marked path meandered up and down until we reached the van again, we had
been out 2 hours covering 4 miles and hadn’t seen a soul:) What a top
morning in snowy Suffolk.
